Courtyard House

Architectural design and construction of custom home in Blacksburg, Virginia.  Green building features include natural ventilation and lighting, use of  reclaimed materials, and orientation to shelter from strong winter winds.


Site-
North-facing, windswept, treeless hilltop with terrific views to the north.

Program- Craftsman-style with stone and timberframe, with open plan for entertaining. Additional plans included a gourmet kitchen, two offices, a workshop, a media room, and plenty of storage. A large garage was planned for a future phase of construction.

House- Southern entry through sheltered courtyard and garden formed by the house, garage and link between. An open plan differentiated by timberframe. Massive stair and fireplace serve as central, interior focus to balance with expansive views to the north. Recycled timbers. Handcrafted details throughout.
